Stefano Ussi studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence with Enrico Pollastrini. During the war of independence he served as a volunteer, but he was captured by the Austrians.

After returning to Florence, he won the Triennale Prize for his 1849 painting of the Resurrection of Lazarus. He exhibited paintings on historical and literary subjects at the Società Promotrice di Belle Arti. His "The Expulsion of the Duke of Athens" was a great success and is now in the Galleria d'Arte Moderna in Florence.

He visited Egypt in 1869 during the opening of the Suez Canal and returned at the invitation of the Khedive in 1872. In 1875 he visited Morocco with his friend Cesare Biseo and the painter Edmondo de Amicis. He exhibited many orientalist paintings in various Italian cities. He died in 1901 in his native Florence.

The painting offered shows a ballroom with figures. The lady in the dress wears a mask, as an old tradition in Italy.
