As a cousin of Jac Douven (Leopoldsburg), Sylvain Douven inherited painting from home. He was a priest painter. He mainly painted landscapes, flowers. He was a member of the Aarschotse and Leuven art circles. Like his uncle, he was a landscape painter and was influenced by the Genk school of Maclot and Emile Van Doren.
